Ever since 2006 I have been travelling the globe with Silversea Cruises. It was a relationship that started back when I was running a Relais & Châteaux property in Melbourne’s Yarra Valley, so when the chance to go to Japan arose, I jumped at it. It has always been a ‘must-do’ on my list as I love Japanese food.
The journey began in Hong Kong. I took Nick, my head chef from maha who was a great candidate to be eating and drinking with me in exotic locations! It wasn’t all play though, we had a handful of cooking demos and dinners on board.
I haven’t shared a room with a bloke since I was a kid with my brother, so it was definitely a ‘special experience’ having a tiny room with two single beds alongside Nick. We both learnt a lot about each other…anyway, Hong Kong!
We ate ourselves stupid with dumplings at Din Tai Fung. And when I mean stupid, I mean stupid! The waitress thought we had more people joining us. What an amazing meal though, I was in heaven! I mean, chicken and black truffle soup dumplings. GET OUT!
Our next stop was Shanghai, bearing one of the most beautiful waterfronts I have ever seen. Beautiful architecture, shopping, people and food…off the hook! A good friend of mine gave me a must-dine recommendation and they were’t wrong. Sichuan Citizen was a real cracker. I loved it. We ate ourselves to the point of death again but loved every minute of it.
Unfortunately my trip got cut short and I didn’t reach my Japan destination. Work back home was calling, there was heaps going on and Shane Delia’s Spice Journey was about to premiere. Nick and I had to disembark in Korea, turn around and come home – after a quick bite of course! Korean BBQ and Kimchi was to die for.
After a million customs and visa issues and a seven hour delay in Shanghai, we finally touched down in Melbourne. I was 3kg heavier but what an amazing experience. Once again, I was looked after my friends at Qantas -thanks MZ you’re a star. Shattered that I didn’t get a chance to go to Japan but it’s on my hit list. As soon as I drop this 3kg, I’m heading back!
